Phonics
Introduce or review diphthongs with children. A diphthong is a vowel sound made by gliding from one sound to another in one syllable; au in cause, aw in claw, ew in new, oi in oil, ou in about, ow in cow, and oy in boy.
Say: Diphthongs are vowel sounds made by gliding from one sound to another in one syllable. Write the diphthongs, au –cause, aw –claw, ew –new, oi –oil, ou –about, ow –cow, and oy –boy on the board. Look at them with children and brainstorm or search through the text for words with diphthongs, making a list of diphthong words for the class word wall or dictionary. 

Word Work

Conjunctions
Say: Conjunctions are words that link and relate two parts of a sentence; and, but, for, nor, or, so and yet. Let's look for conjunctions in the text and see how they are used. Give children two sentences and a conjunction and ask them how they can link the sentences. 

Grammar
Discuss suffixes with children.
Say: Suffixes are groups of letters added to the end of a word to change the meaning. The suffix -ly means in the manner of, -ful means full of. Let's look for words with suffixes in the text or think of words with suffixes. Make a list of words from the text and ask for synonyms. Discuss the how word choice can enhance a story. These can be included in the class word wall or dictionary.
