Lesson Plans for NOISE IN THE NIGHT level L

Expand the Reading

Writing Connection
Provide children with paper, crayons or markers, and pencils, Have children write about an experience they have had outdoors, like camping, or going in the car to a special place, and hiking, fishing, snow skiing, skating, riding bicycles, etc. Have them provide details: where they went, what they did, who they were with, and why the experience was fun (or not fun). When they have finished, have them illustrate their writing and then have them share their experience with the class.

Social Studies Connection
Have children research the topic of tents. Explain that there are many different kinds of tents. Children may wish to look at kinds of tents in a camping mail-order catalog, or go with a parent to a camping store to learn about kinds of tents. Ask children to find out the kinds of materials tents may be made of, how many people can fit in various tents, and how tents are assembled. Encourage them to find out what kinds of tents may be best in warm or cold climates and in wet or dry climates. When children have finished their research, have them share what they learned with the class.

You might invite a staff member from a camping store to give a presentation on tents, including an easy-assembly demonstration. Alternately, a parent might be an experienced camper who can give a presentation.

Reading Independently
Have children read quietly aloud. Remind them to use pictures and to sound out words to decode the text. If possible, have children sit in quiet places where they feel comfortable to read the book. Make yourself available to children in case they get stuck on a word or passage.

Home Connection
