Comprehending the Text
Ask children what strategies they used to help them pronounce words they didn’t know or what they did when they came to a difficult part on the page. Record their responses. Encourage all children to share their strategies. Check for understanding. To monitor comprehension, ask questions like:

Summarize the story.
What was your favorite part?
What were the names of the two boys?
What was the name of the dog?
Who slept in the tent next to the boys?
What did the boys do to find the loud noise?
Who was making the noise? What was the noise called?
