| Lesson Plans for CAN YOU SAY PTERODACTYL level J Building Skills Phonological Awareness Listen for syllables in words Say flying and name. Clap as you say each word. Ask children to clap as you say one, two, and three syllable words. Say the words slowly and model clapping with children. Have children clap to these words: leathery, happened, upon, friend, louder, pterodactyl, nobody, somebody, laughed, and scrunched. Word Work Capital letters Write the names of some of the animals from the story on the chalkboard. Underline the first letter of each name. Explain to children that the underlined letters are capitalized, or upper-case letters. Ask: When do we use capital letters? Allow children to volunteer answers. Explain that words at the beginning of every sentence are capitalized. Have children point to the beginning sentence words in the book, and to the animal names.
