Benchmark Books help assess the appropriate developmental level for guided reading sessions and the readiness of a student to progress to the next level. The student is given a book she or he has never seen (a Benchmark Book) to read aloud. The teacher records the student's reading behavior using a Running Record form. If a student reads with 95 percent accuracy and responds well to comprehension questions, she or he can progress to the next level. From Levels C-Z, teachers can use Benchmark Quick Check quizzes to determine how well students are absorbing what they read. Follow these guidelines to administer the quizzes. Reading A-Z includes two benchmark books--one fact and one fiction--for each of the 27 reading levels. Reward students' progress with our Benchmark WOWzers. Editors Note: Foreign language editions should not be used as formal assessments of a student's reading progress in that language.
