The letter o makes several sounds. The most common representation of the short /o/ vowel sound is in words where the vowel is in a closed pattern, such as in dot, hot, dock, frog, and clock. There are other ways to represent the short /o/ vowel sound, such as ou in cough, oh in John, and au in astronaut.
