The letter e makes several sounds. The most common representation of the short /e/ vowel sound is in words where the vowel is in a closed pattern, as in red, bed, den, and vet. It also appears in the initial position in words like egg. There are other ways to represent the short /e/ vowel sound, such as the ai in said, ay in says, and ie in friend.
