Near his family's camp in Canada, Sam Beaver discovers a pair of trumpeter swans. One of the hatched cygnets, Louis, cannot make any sounds so he goes to school with Sam and learns to read and write. Louis teaches himself to play a stolen trumpet to earn money and to attract the attention of Serena, a beautiful young swan. Serena and Louis fall in love and with Sam's help, they leave the zoo, settle the debt for the trumpet, and return to freedom in the wilderness.
