Preventing the Summer Slide
| We all know children lose literacy skills over the summer. But the skill loss can be avoided if students are encouraged to read over the summer. Now, Reading A-Z and Raz-Kids can help. By using the resources on both sites, students get to read a book in four different modes: listen, online read with word support, online read without support, and traditional book format. What a great way to reinforce and build their reading skills! And it's as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4 to set up! |
On Reading A-Z:
Step 1: Select books from Reading A-Z, and print out a book list. Or use our complete list of books, highlighting sections for students to choose from.
Step 2: Have students select books they want to read from your book list using the Summer Reading Order Form.
Step 3: Students turn over the order forms to volunteer book builders who can assemble the books for your students.
Step 4: Have parents and students sign the Summer Reading Contracts, and send home the Monthly Reading Report Forms so students can log the books they have read.

Let Raz-Kids Help Too!
Step 1: On Raz-Kids, use the management tool to assign the appropriate level books to each student in your class from the Reading A-Z book list. Name their assignment Summer Reading.
Step 2: Have parents and students sign the Summer Reading Contracts. Now your students are all set to log on, read, listen, record, and more!
Step 3: The Raz-Kids management system tracks student reading so you can log on at any time and see what and if your students are reading.
Step 4: Make sure students are enabled for Bookroom access so they can browse the bookshelves for engaging summer reading at any level.
